Benjamin Gelman

Dr. Gelman is a neuropathologist and a neurochemist specializing in neuroAIDS. In addition to CHARTER, Dr. Gelman is the founder and Principal Investigator of the Texas NeuroAIDS Research Center with clinics in Galveston, Houston and Dallas. The Center is one of four HIV brain repositories of the National NeuroAIDS Tissue Consortium (NNTC). Interests include synaptic transmission and peripheral neuropathy. One project is elucidating how reducing HIV loads with highly active antiretroviral therapy influences painful peripheral neuropathy. Another project is exploring how neuronal protein turnover through the ubiquitin-proteasome system is abnormal in people with HIV dementia.
